Route 6: Mugello by bike in the woods, to San Cresci Church
The itineraries to do in Mugello are millions, a common features is the fact that all of them pass through woods and groves, of the most beautiful in Tuscany. This route starts from Borgo San Lorenzo and climbs up along Monte Giovi in the middle of beech trees, oaks and chestnut trees.
This route is on cycle path, asphalted roads and partly on dirt road, which is dry during summer but muddy in winter, it also has many steep hills, and thats why is recommended and more suitable fro medium trained cyclists or e-bikes owners.
Departure point is from Ponte di Sieve, just at the entrance of Borgo San Lorenzo, take the cycle path and proceed until the football field in Sagginale, cross the Ponte di Annibale bridge and continue straight until you find a junction. Here turn right and merge into the Provincial Road 41, pass the church (it will be on your left) and take the first exit on the left (Via di Zeti). Now continue on the road and at the junction turn left again, directions to Romignano/ Madonna della Febbre/ Ghetto, you will be on a countryside road, quite hard because very steep, populated by its residents, but the panorama you have is stunning.
Continue on this road through the houses, vegetable gardens and pines. At a certain point on the hill you have a crossroad, turn right until you find another junction, here turn left and cycle along a wood fence, where you see huge park and if you are lucky, some horses.
Keep cycling on the road, that is still quite steep, the path now starts to be in the wood, but the ground is still cyclable and visible, you will be now surrounded by trees and fresh air.
After the last steep part the street becomes easier to cycle. Keep going and take the first road on your right and then turn right again. After few hundreds of meters you find a junction where on your right you will see a hill with a big iron cross on it, you have to turn left, going out of the wood and cycle along a fence, follow it and you will be in a very ancient chestnut grove, you can stop for a while to enjoy the view of these beautiful trees.
Leave the grove and take the road on your right, after a short steep hill you will be at San Cresci cemetery. Follow the asphalted road and at the junction turn right to reach after few meters San Cresci Church in Valcava, one of the most important in the whole Mugello. Before leaving, take some time to visit the romanesqe parish church and to enjoy the beautiful panorama you will have around you, just on the terrace in front of the church.
The excursion moves now on paved road, take for a while the road you have already done until you reach a tabernacle. Proceed on the left, always on asphalted roads, that here alterns hills and very long slopes where you will have the chance to take some breath. At the end of a quite steep hill that goes along a grazing, you will find a junction (on your left you have a small natural stoned house), here turn left and continue on the paved road, that after a flat level part starts to go down to località Cistio. It will drive you back to the Provincial Road 41, once you are on the main road turn right and proceed until La Casa del Prosciutto in Località Ponte a Vicchio. Here starts the cycle path that will bring you back to Borgo San Lorenzo.
Touristic and cultural points of interest
San Cresci in Valcava Church
This church is dated 1110, location is on a hill 405 meters high, on the road that leads to Monte Giovi. Difference with all other churches in Mugello, it is not located on main roads that connects Florence to north of Italy. In spite of that, it has always been a very important destination for pilgrimages during medieval time. The legend tells that inside it has San Cresci remains, he started to spread Christianity in Mugello. During the years the church has changed a lot, because of earthquakes and many renovations had been done, in particular in 1703, commissioned by Cosimo III to the architect Foggini, that also did renovations in Badia di Buonsollazzo, in Vaglia.
